MAPS Monthly Program – November 12, 2012 ~ Non-Competitive Educational Critique Night

Whether you’re an accomplished photographer or just getting started, our panel of photographic educators will offer their opinions and suggestions to enhance your photographic knowledge and vision.

Join photographers Chris Aquino, Will Clay and Hank Erdmann with their extensive photographic skills as they critique your images as they would in a classroom setting. This style of critique is essential for your growth as photographic artists. No need to be uncomfortable with the critique process.

Quoting Hank: “Critique is little more than an opinion, but an opinion based on experience and skill.  Too many really good photographers make bad jurors/critiquers because they fail to remember that and fall back on silly things like “the maker should have been closer”. They worry they might insult vs. inform and fail to remember any constructive comment if made nicely and genuinely will inform.  To critique for me is to think how the image was executed vs. how I would attempt it, what in my mind works and what doesn’t and then explain how I would fix or execute the part I think doesn’t work as best it could.  Occasionally the best critique is just “Wow”.

We will be accepting images for critique via email starting Thursday, November 1 through Sunday, November 11. We are planning on critiquing 50 images that night.

The process will be as follows:

Each member can submit 1 primary image and 1 additional image. They must be numbered 1 and 2. We will accept the first 50 members to respond. Should we have less than 50 requests we will use members additional images (#2) picked randomly.

Images should be sent via email to Steven Mayer wheat10chef@comcast.net using the MAPS Photo Submission guidelines. Following is a link to the guidelines.

I will acknowledge each submission via email upon receipt of your images. Questions are always welcome.

Enjoy and take advantage of this wonderful educational opportunity.

Is there any way to get the images shown tonight posted on the web site? Some were very good and would like to see them again. Of course, it might mean getting permission from each person.

  4. Andy Dichter says:

Very enjoyable and really quite educational but, and I know there are time restraints, I would have liked the contributors to be given the option to briefly discuss their images before the critiquing in the event that certain “unwanted” elements might have been included deliberately for a reason or that aspect ratios were purposely chosen which might not benefit from cropping despite the image being more technically correct afterwards, IMHO. Great speakers. Good humor. Thanks.
