Humpback Whale Flukes – Most of the whales we saw were baleen whales, which have baleen plates hanging down from the upper jaw. The whales take in large quantities of water, then expel it, but the flat, flexible plates have frayed edges which filter out the krill, which the whales then swallow. The scars on this Humpback’s flukes are from earlier attacks by Orcas.
