The Antarctic Ecosystem

Wandering Albatross – With an 11-foot wingspan, the Wandering Albatross has the longest wingspan of any bird. Its body is about 4½ feet long. Albatrosses are very graceful in flight, gaining speed as they glide down near the surface of the ocean, then turn to gain altitude from the wind with almost no effort. They can lock their wings and actually sleep while they fly, but during the rare calm periods, they may have to sit on the ocean waiting for wind.
