Birds: Why am I always looking up?

This month’s program will focus one photographer’s journey to taking better pictures. Arnold Koenig has been photographing everything from weddings to nature for fifty years. Arnold will share the images he’s taken and the lessons he’s learned as cameras and technology have become more advanced. He will talk about how and where to find birds, how to photograph the birds, and how and when to use available technologies.

About our speaker

Arnold J. Koenig is a retired electronics technician; he worked in the retail petroleum industry, which helped to support his photography habit. The camera he uses most often is the Canon R5 Mark II digital camera.

Arnold’s passion is wildlife photography. He spends his free time at The Morton Arboretum or at Pioneer Park in Naperville looking for subjects to photograph.

As a member of the Downers Grove Camera Club since 2009, he has entered many images in competitions; several have won awards. For many years, Arnold ranked in 1st or 2nd place for all four categories in print competitions—with over 85 in the Print-of-the-Month category. Some of his images have been entered in CACCA (Chicago Area Camera Club Association) competitions and won awards there, too. He won Print of the Year in Small Monochrome in 2011, Print of the Year in Large Monochrome in 2012, Print of the Year in Small Color in 2013, Print of the Year in Individual Nature in 2013, and Print of the Year in Small Color 2014. He has a total of 16 Prints of the Month and 5 Prints of the Year. Arnold achieved TOPS in Monochrome Prints and TOPS in Color Prints 2014.

Some of Arnold’s images are displayed on the kiosk at Pioneer Park and Knoch Knolls Park in Naperville. Outdoor Illinois published his work in February 2007, February 2009, February 2010, and February 2011.
