Photo Review Night

This month’s program is designed to give members an opportunity to receive expert advice about their photographs. Members are encouraged to submit images interpreting the theme, Goodbye Winter, Hello Spring, but this is not a requirement; all image subjects will be accepted. Members are invited to submit photographs between March 9 and April 10 for our panel of three members to review and critique at the April 13 monthly meeting. Time permitting, the panel will review 30 images. One image per member will be selected until we have a total of 30 images. A second and third image will be included on a first-come, first-served basis.

Here’s what to expect at this program:

Images will be reviewed by MAPS members Darcy Berg, Al Alvis and Mark Hannen. They will be visible only to the in-person attendees. Members’ images will be projected onto the screen in the Arbor Room and via Zoom.

The reviews will address:

  • Overall impact of image and first impression
  • Composition: subject placement, background, and border
  • Lighting: subject lighting and lighting on eyes (if applicable)
  • For color images, overall color balance adjustment of the intensities of the colors
  • Primarily for monochrome images, tonal range: the spectrum of light values in an image, extending from the darkest shadows to the brightest highlights
  • Primarily for monochrome images, texture quality: perceived depth or appearance of a surface
  • Sharpness of the subject and eyes (if applicable)
  • Overall evaluation of strengths and areas for improvement

We trust that even less experienced photographers will be comfortable with this type of image review. Submit one of your best images or an image that you know you need some help with. Regardless, send it in—that’s what April’s program is all about!

Image submission will begin on March 9 and close on April 10.

Image Preparation and Submission

  • Members can submit up to three images—jpg only and preferably at least 2,000 pixels on the long side.
