Mon, Mar 09, 2026 - 7:00 pm-8:30 pm
Morton Arboretum Thornhill Center and Zoom

In this presentation, fine art photographer Mike Baker explores the essential elements that transform a simple photograph into a compelling monochrome image. Drawing from years of experience in black-and-white photography, Mike will discuss how light, shadow, contrast, texture, and composition work together to create mood and impact without the distraction of color. He’ll share examples from his own portfolio, examine classic works, and offer practical tips for both in-camera technique and post-processing. Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of how to see in monochrome, make creative decisions in the field, and use tonal range to evoke emotion and tell a story. Whether you’re new to black-and-white photography or looking to refine your skills, this program will help you elevate your monochrome images from ordinary to unforgettable. Mike will cover the following topics:
- Why monochrome?
- Composition
- Tonal contrast and range
- Light
- Texture and detail
- Emotional impact
About Our Speaker

Mike Baker is an award-winning and published fine art photographer specializing in black and white, architectural, and landscape photography. Born and raised in the DC/Maryland area and now based in Chicagoland, Mike’s work reflects a deep appreciation for structure, shadow, and the subtle drama found in everyday spaces. His journey in photography began during his service in the U.S. Air Force, when a camera purchased to document his travels quickly evolved into a passion for visual storytelling. Mike’s distinctive style is defined by a mastery of light and form, transforming familiar environments into refined compositions that feel both timeless and contemplative. His photographs invite viewers to slow down, look deeper, and rediscover the beauty often hidden in plain sight.
When he’s not behind the lens, Mike explores the quiet geometry of cities, the solitude of natural landscapes, and the conversations between the two. See some of Mike’s work at https://www.3rdeyephotographic.com/.
