Post Processing for Fur and Feathers
Mon, Nov 09, 2026 - 7:00 pm-8:30 pm
Morton Arboretum Thornhill Center Only
MAPS member, Joe Norton, will share his digital darkroom workflow in a live, post-processing editing demonstration. Joe will transform some of his original wildlife raw images into photographic art. The program will begin with a short introduction to the Adobe Lightroom Developer Module and a brief explanation of what all the sliders do. (Joe assures us that Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop Bridge are the same software editing engines, and that sliders in photo editing tools control the same things.)
With your help, Joe will select one of his wildlife raw images and edit it live onscreen, sharing his baseline editing values, and then fine-tuning his post-processing edits. Joe will show you how he uses his baseline editing values to create a preset for his editing and then he’ll use this preset to work on other wildlife images. The demonstration will also reveal how Joe fine tunes his image editing by moving images in and out of Photoshop, cleaning up distractions, applying gradients, resizing, and exporting images for display or print. If time permits, Joe may even share the secret sauce for one of his images by demonstrating how he applies a “texture overlay.”
If you are new to digital image post-processing or still learning and want to learn more, prepare to be amazed with the potential of your own images. If you are a seasoned digital image post-processing editing expert, you may yawn and say, “I know how to do all that.” That may be true, but you never know when you’ll learn a trick or two!
Joe will have quick reference handouts for us at the end of the program, so you won’t have to scribble notes during the program—just sit back and enjoy the demonstrations.
Final Joe Note: “Everything I demonstrate in this program can be applied directly to all other imaging subjects – landscapes, portraits, seascapes, flowers, street scenes, etc. I just happen to like fur and feather subjects, so these are the images I will demonstrate.”
Speaker Bio
Joe Norton is a 50+ year information technology and business professional who also enjoys photography. His first “true” camera was one of the Sony’s first commercially available digital cameras released before memory cards were available. His MAVICA camera had a floppy disk drive built into the camera body. He is a true digital-native photographer.

Joe’s extensive business travels around the word provides him with the perfect laboratory to practice street and travel photography—his photographic “hard way / hard knocks” learning method. Over decades, Joe’s photography subjects of choice have evolved to include landscapes, seascapes, aviation and air shows, wildlife, and flowers. Like many of us, he captured images in camera as jpeg files, because in his words, “I was afraid of MANUAL and RAW!” Photography mentors over the years taught him how to fully use the capabilities of his equipment—and that camera raw files could be his friend. From the day he broke the code of the Exposure Triangle, manual camera settings, and camera raw files, Joe embarked on a personal journey to learn and improve his image captures and post-processing.
Joe’s images have been recognized in local, regional, and international photo competitions with honors and best-of-shows. His work has been published in the United States and Europe; his Sandhill Crane images have been featured in the Crane Trust Annual Report. www.joenortonwildlife.photography
