Painting with Light – A Transformative Process – Harold Ross
Apr 2025

Join photographer Harold Ross for a presentation of his work and photographic methodology,
which he refers to as sculpting with light. Harold has been perfecting his style for over 30 years.
Using his unique methods, Harold reveals his subjects with light that is gradually built up over
time in a multi-capture process. Sculpting with light allows him to expose aspects of his subjects
that often escape the casual viewer’s attention. Harold is particularly drawn to photographing
objects with a history: old machines, tools, and various still-life subjects.
In his landscape work, Harold explores the interplay between the real and the unreal. By
illuminating undeniably real scenes with light that cannot occur naturally, he creates a quandary
for the viewer’s mind. This same subtle interplay can also be seen in his still-life work.
Designed for photographers, Harold’s technically focused talk will cover the following topics
and use his work to illustrate important concepts:
- Light painting: The process, equipment, and studio setup
- Sculpting with light: How it works and its advantages
- Principles of Light: Essential concepts for understanding light in photography
About Our Speaker
Harold Ross has enjoyed a 40-year photography career, beginning with a focus on fine art and a
degree from the Maryland Institute, College of Art.

For over 30 of those years, Harold owned a studio that produced images for advertising. During
this time, he practiced and perfected his light painting methods, which became his exclusive
method of lighting.
Harold is a firm believer in the transformative power of light. He aims to reveal aspects of his
subjects that are often overlooked under standard lighting conditions. He has codified and
simplified his techniques into concepts taught in his online video courses.
His large-scale color work has been exhibited, collected, and published in the United States and
internationally. Harold resides in Lancaster County, PA, with his wife, Vera.
Gallery representation: Susan Spiritus Gallery, CA., Studio 2, St. Michaels, Md., and High Noon
